Jaisalmer is an enchanting city with rich history and culture known for its battle-scarred forts, beautiful sand dunes, and ancient temples. You must have seen this city in various movies and felt amazed by its beauty. So this season, let's experience the thrill and chill of this city in person. Rajasthan's golden city of Jaisalmer has many gems to offer. One of the most exquisite of all would be the Jaisalmer War Museum.

Jaisalmer War Museum, otherwise known as JWM, is a museum that pays homage to the brave soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces. These soldiers fought valiantly in some of the most challenging battles in history.

As a memorial, it displays the enormous strength and riches of Indian soldiers and the heroic contributions and sacrifices they made during wartime. The Indian Army's Dessert Corps developed it under Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews. This is a must-visit place in Jaisalmer for anyone interested in the country's military history.

Architecture of Jaisalmer War Museum

With its sleek lines and glass façade, the Jaisalmer War Museum is an outstanding example of contemporary architecture. The museum was designed by Indian architect Shri Jasbir Sawhney, who wanted to create a building to honour those who struggled in challenging conditions.

The building covers an area of 15 acres and has a built-up area of 24,000 square meters. Several wartime collections were housed in the museum, which was reopened in 2015 to mark the golden anniversary of the Indian-Pakistan War. The museum includes equipment, armour, vehicles and more.

A prestigious wall has also been dedicated to all Param Vir and Maha Vir Chakra holders. Furthermore, the hall is divided into three sections: the Audio Visual Room, Indian Army Hall, and Laungewale Hall. Additionally, there is a souvenir shop and cafe at the museum.

At the museum, you can see a Hunter aircraft used in the battle of Longewala that contributed greatly to the destruction of the enemy tank. Additionally, the museum displays strategies used by the Indian Army during the 1971 India-Pakistan War.

History of Jaisalmer War Museum

The Jaisalmer War Museum was inaugurated in 2015 by Lieutenant General Ashok Singh, then the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command. The museum was set up to showcase the Indian Army's bravery and sacrifices during the 1965 Indo-Pak War and the 1971 Indo-Pak War.

The museum has a vast collection of war memorabilia, including tanks, guns, and other weapons. The museum showcases two display rooms- Longewala Hall and Indian Army Hall.

Longewala Hall and Military Hall display images of combat tactics and skills great militants use to win battle after battle. Also presented in the Audiovisual room are some stories about India's war heroes and their contributions. In addition, the museum displays fighter jets, guns, and other military equipment and weapons.
